Automatic Battery Pack Assembly Line

automatic battery pack assembly lineThis automatic battery pack assembly line uses robots and automation to assemble different sized battery packs from cartons of EV cells.

Process Description:

Multiple sizes of cartons or boxes of battery cells are loaded into the system with minimal manual inputs.  Next, a robot with a visual sensor picks up a specified number of battery cells from the carton.  The robot places these cells into a “flipper station” that correctly orients the battery cells and places them on a conveyor that moves them through an on-the-fly plasma cleaning station.  This station improves weldability of battery terminals thus increasing their performance.  Next, the batteries are moved through a rotary station that places each battery’s bar code exactly below the bar code reader where multiple cells are scanned at once.  From there, the battery cells are sent to an OCV and ACIR testing station for cell categorization.  Then, a robot picks up the cells from test result based sorting and takes them to parallel sorting conveyors where a rotary flipper inverts the cell terminals into alternate rows.  The cells move through another bar code reading station for track-and-trace.  A vision system checks the cell polarity where the cells are oriented as required for customized battery pack formation.
