This automatic bag emptying system was designed for a business that needed to automate powder discharge from bags while maintaining a clean, dust-controlled environment.
The integrated solution utilizes an automated bag opener, a mechanical product recovery section, a transfer conveyor, and a self-contained dust collection system. While this application focused on powders, this type of industrial de-bagging system can also be used for granules and other dry bulk materials.

Process Description

The process begins when filled bags enter the automated bag opener via an infeed conveyor.
- Precision Cutting: Inside the machine, a rotary blade cuts each bag into three equal strips. This method ensures the bag is fully opened without shredding the material, preventing contamination of the powder.
- Trommel Separation: After the bags are sliced, both the bag pieces and the powder fall into a rotating drum (trommel) with a perforated surface.
- Product Recovery: As the drum rotates, the tumbling action separates the powder from the cut bag material. The product passes through the perforations and drops into a collection hopper below.
- Downstream Transfer: From the hopper, the recovered material is transferred by a mechanical conveyor to the next stage of the ingredient batching system.
- Waste Management: Simultaneously, the empty bag strips continue through the drum, where they are discharged into a separate waste stream for disposal or compaction.

Advanced Dust Containment
Because the application involves fine powders, the system features a self-contained dust collection system. This unit captures airborne particles generated during the slitting and tumbling process, preventing “dusting” in the plant. This improves housekeeping, protects worker health, and creates a much cleaner operating environment near the discharge point.

What Can Be Processed with This Type of System?
Although this project involved powdered ingredients, this high-speed slitter and rotary drum separator can be used for various dry bulk products. Depending on the material flow and bag type, these systems can handle:
- Fine Powders (Flour, chemicals, cement, minerals)
- Granular Materials (Plastic pellets, grains, salt)
- Paper, Plastic, and Poly-woven Bags
